Mercy Convent & St. Joseph’s College crowned Connacht Futsal Champs

The Connaught 1st Year Futsal Finals took place today (Thursday, 5 Feb) at the impressive Sligo IT.

The Boys section was won by St Josephs College, Galway in a closely contested group.

The final match in the league run format would prove to be the decisive fixture as St Josephs’ took on Summerhill College of Sligo in a winner take all match.

St Josephs’ came out on top 2-1 winners in a contest that was full of excellent individual skills and strong committed team efforts.

Summerhill took the lead through a Ryan McManus goal after good work from Aaron McGoldrick but St Josephs soon got back in the tie with an excellent strike from Ben Murphy.

The game could have went either way but in the last couple of minutes Man of the Match Colm Hughes secured the win with a low finish past the Summerhill keeper to crown St Josephs Connaught Champions ensuring a 100% winning record throughout the tournament.

Summerhill of Sligo were also well represented by Jack Selby, Ryan McManus, Aaron McGoldrick and Jake Dykes.

St Clare’s of Manor Hamilton finished 3rd in the group only just behind Summerhill on goal difference and had some excellent players in the form of Conor Hurd, Cian Rock, Darren Murray and Stephen McPartland.

St. Muredach’s of Mayo finished 4th in the group with Darragh Ferguson, Jamie Cawley, Ciaran Treacy all netting 2 goals, and Michael Murray being their player of the tournament .

Elphin Community School, from Roscommon finished 5th in the table with Darren Lee their top scorer and Aidan Murray their player of the tournament.

The girls tournament proved to be just as competitive with Mercy Convent Secondary College Ballina, Co. Mayo claiming the Connaught title.

The girls displayed some magic moments, winning three games and drawing one. With an all round team performance, they proved themselves the best squad on the day.

Fiona Treacy, Cliona Kelly and Jessica Butler were all star performers for the Champions.
St Clare’s of Manorhamilton , Co . Leitrim finished 2nd in the group and came very close to beating the eventual winners.

Ailbhe Clancy, Sadhbh Clancy, Aoife Dolan and Edel McGloughin showed some excellent skills throughout the Tournament.

Castlerea Community College, Co. Roscommon finished in a respective 3rd place.

Michelle Taylor was their player of the tournament and Meave King finished top scorer for the school.

Mr. Jim Noone Connacht / Ulster FAI Regional Manager was in attendance to present the trophies to the delight of Mercy Convent and St. Joseph’s College Captains.
