England in driving seat after Match Day One


Scotland 1-1 Republic of Ireland (Scotland won 3-2 on pens for extra bonus point)

The Republic of Ireland were seconds away from securing a hard-earned victory over their hosts but Amy SHARKEY popped up late on to equalise for Scotland in the opening game of the 2023 Bob Docherty Cup in Parklea Playing Fields this afternoon (April 2)


The goal cancelling out Tallaght Community School scholar Ella KELLY’s 52nd minute opener for the Irish crew.


With a one-all draw, a bonus point was up for grabs with a penalty shoot-out.


The Irish were first up and Aoife Fennell saw her shot go wide. Scotland’s sub Oluwadra Ositelu converted. Leah McGrath was next up for Ireland’s second, and it was saved while Laura Fanning saved Sharkey’s attempt with Scotland’s second. The third penalty saw Lily Anne O’Meara score while Scotland’s Jessica Husband did the honours for the hosts. The fourth of Ireland’s spot kicks was netted by Grace Ehinger while Scotland extended their tally through Erin Husband. Ireland’s goal-scorer Kelly missed the fifth leaving the contest out of reach. Scotland grabbing the bonus point 3-2 on penalties.


In the other fixture of the afternoon England had a comfortable victory over Northern Ireland, winning out 5-0. Abi Conway (2), Phoebe Cowley, Aoife Colbert Martin and Chloe Giddings were the goal-scorers. They’re top of the table on three points, while Scotland have 2 and Republic of Ireland have one. Northern Ireland will be hoping for better luck in their next outing.


All teams will enjoy a rest day tomorrow (Monday, April 3).


The penultimate test will see Northern Ireland face off against Scotland at 1pm on Tuesday in Renfrew FC while the Republic of Ireland are pipped against England at 4pm.


Another rest day in scheduled for Wednesday.


The Republic of Ireland will then wrap up proceedings against neighbouring Northern Ireland on Thursday, April 6. While England play Scotland in the other outing, both games kicking off at 1pm in Parklea Playing Fields, Glasgow.
