Roundup Match Day Two

St. Joseph’s Patrician College face St. Ninian’s High School in title race

Another exciting conclusion to the penultimate round of fixtures for the six teams involved as there were three nail-biting wins from this morning’s SAFIB Allen McKinstry Cup proceedings.

Eoin GACQUIN was the match day hero for St. Joseph’s Patrician College, Galway (the Bish) as they defeated Northern Ireland Champions St. Columb’s College, Derry by a solitary goal in a cracking game in Athlone Town AFC.

While at the same time in TUS, Athlone, local lads Marist College went down 2-0 to English starlets South Hunsley School.

The later kick-off in Athlone Town AFC saw Scottish outfit St. Ninian’s overcoming the challenge of Welsh dragons Ysgol Greenhill School, Tenby in the other fixture of the afternoon to set up tomorrow morning’s pairings.

So it will be St. Joseph’s entertaining St. Ninian’s in the top of the table clash at 11.30am in Athlone Town AFC. Can last season’s Irish Champions finally claim their name on the trophy with their third appearance in this competition over the years or will it be the 2017 SAFIB Allen McKinstry Cup stars that add to their collection. It should make for an epic ending to this season’s campaign.

Elsewhere, South Hunsley School will face off against their Welsh counterparts at 9.30am in Athlone Town AFC and Marist College, Athlone will take on Derry students St. Columb’s College to conclude their series endeavours.

Marist College, Athlone 0-2 South Hunsley School, Melton

Joshua Henderson (30+1), Henry Edwards (52)

English side South Hunsley School were down to 10 men for the last few minutes of the game but grinded out a tough win against Martin Grogan’s side at TUS Athlone this morning.

Joshua HENDERSON chipped in for the opening goal just before the interval while Lewis Blanchard had a gilt edged opportunity to double their tally four minutes into the restart but his effort went wide of the mark.

Henry EDWARDS made it 2-0 with eight minutes remaining as he smashed in an excellent goal for the visitors.

GAME SIX

Ysgol Greenhill School Tenby 0-2 St. Ninian’s High School, Giffnock

John Joe Leddy (12), Connor Sweeney (53)

Two goals on either side of half-time was enough for Jordon Lough’s side to advance to the top of the table clash tomorrow morning as they overcame a hardworking Greenhill’s challenge.

The opening goal came twelve minutes in when John Joe LEDDY grabbed a lovely goal with a neat finish past Ewan Philips.

Ethan McGillvray could have doubled their advantage shortly after but his two quick attempts were denied, the first saved brilliantly by Philips while his second effort sailed over the crossbar.

A piece of magic for St. Ninian’s second as Connor SWEENEY lobbed the keeper from the edge of the box to finish lovely for that crucial two goal cushion with seven minutes remaining.

Unfortunately for Evans’ side they couldn’t penetrate the Scottish goal and left the Midlands venue disappointed.
