Girls gear up for Interprovincial Tournament

2008

The Interprovincial tournament will take place from 14 – 16 November 2008 in Willow Park, Athlone.

The Interprovincial’s are the first step in the process of selecting the FAI Schools U15 International squad for next year’s Bob Docherty Tournament so as well as provincial honours, there is plenty at stake with sixty eight of the top players in Irish schools taking part.

Last year, Munster captured the elusive three in a row crown and will be gunning for glory yet again this year. Manager, Claire Wehrley (St. Flannan’s College, Ennis) will be quietly confident heading into the tournament but anticipates tough competition from the other provinces as Munster challenges to defend their title.

Munster will mount a strong challenge with Rebecca Kearney of Colaiste Choilm, who was capped for FAI Schools last season, making a return. Joining her are four other players from last season’s Interprovincial panel. These include Aisling Mullen of St. Flannan’s College, Laura Lynch of Mount Mercy College, Lauren Murphy of Carrigaline Community School and Zoe O’Donoghue of St. Declan’s Community College.

Paul Howard has a fresh approach to the tournament having drafted 15 new faces into the panel this season. However, Erica Cahill of Trinity Comprehensive, who was capped last year for the International team makes a welcome return with veteran Chloe Mustaki of St. Killian’s DSD who was part of the Leinster panel last year.

The Leinster squad shows a breadth of influence from throughout the province with Howard selecting players from Abbeyleix, Ballymahon, Leixlip, Kells, Drogheda as well as Longford, Wexford and Dublin.

Dom Coll’s Connacht panel has six of last year’s players eligible to play this season. Those making a return include Grace Kelly (St. Louis Community School, Kiltimagh), Ena Butler (St. Paul’s, Oughterard), Ciara Cormican (Presentation College), Laura Carroll (Dominican College), Shauna Jackson (Holy Rosary College) and goalkeeper Ashley Rose (Convent of Mercy, Westport). Connacht youngster Niamh Kelly (St. Louis Community School) and Sarah Rowe (St. Mary’s Secondary School) are no strangers to school’s football having participated with the EA Sports FAI Schools 5 A Side competition last May, both capturing player of the tournament accolades for their outstanding performances in the competition.

Ulster has four representatives from Loreto Convent, Letterkenny namely Maria Carr, Marion Doherty, Lauren Harper and Mary O’Donnell. Indeed both Maria and Marion return to the panel this year with goalkeeper Fiona Callan from Inver College, Monaghan. Moville Community College has three representatives this year in Eimear Lafferty, Gemma Mc Guinness and Charmaine McDermott. Gemma has been quite successful playing football at primary school level having collected a winner’s medal in the EA Sports FAI Schools 5 A Side National Finals last May with Greencastle. Deele College, Raphoe will be represented by Fiona Allen and Niamh Mc Glinchey while Georgina Gordon and Louise McLaughlin have been selected from Carndonagh Community College.

Donegal schools dominate the Ulster selection however; Fiona Callan and newcomer Karen Delaney from Monaghan make up the final grouping. Manager Sean McFadden is hoping to improve on last year’s performance and will be poised to break the Munster dominance this year. As part of the International trial process, a training squad will be selected by the Irish School’s management team.

Roscommon native, Michael Gallagher of Summerhill College, Athlone will return to manage the team after a very successful campaign last year which saw them retain the Bob Docherty Tournament Trophy. Assisting Michael will be veteran Margaret Mulhall of Moville Community College, Donegal and the ever experienced Dave Collins of Alexandra College, Dublin as Coach.

This provisional training squad will have several weekend sessions later in the year ahead of the Bob Docherty Tournament which will take place in April 2009. In keeping with the long standing tradition of maintaining the interest in the competition until the final matches on Sunday morning, the draw for Saturday and Sunday’s matches will be made following the games on Friday evening.
