Balbriggan CC & Loreto SS, Kilkenny crowned Leinster Futsal Champs

The boys from Balbriggan Community College and the girls from Loreto Secondary School in Kilkenny were crowned FAI Schools First Year Futsal Leinster Champions yesterday (November 20) in the marvellous surrounds of Franciscan College, Gormanston in Co: Meath

The Post Primary Schools futsal competition is in its fifth year nationally caters for first year students with both boys and girls categories catered for:

The competition was split into two sections, boys and girls, with two groups in each section and group winners progressing to their respective final:

The College’s indoor facilities are unrivalled and an impressive 240 participants from 20 schools made it a day to remember at the Meath facility:

 

BOYS SECTION

 

In the first grouping, Balbriggan won all four games in their group stages in convincing fashion: The Leinster stars opened their account with a 7/1 victory over Mountrath CS which was followed up by a 9/0 whitewash of Wilson Hospital School: Dundalk Grammar proved more competitive with a 6/2 win to the Dublin side: The final game was an eleven goal thriller with defending champions Dublin Oak as James Harding’s side won out 6/5 in a close encounter:

The second grouping was dominated by Boyne Community School having registered eight points with their nearest rivals in the group, Colaiste an Atha on four points alongside Pipers Hill:

Boyne won 4/1 against Colaiste an Atha in the opening fixture: Their winning streak was extended with a 5/1 victory over Pipers Hill: Their penultimate game against Colaiste Eoin ended 4/1 and Boyne wrapped up morning proceedings with a 4/2 win against Grennan College:

This left group one winners, Balbriggan up against group two winners, Boyne in the final: The game ended in a 1/1 draw with both teams playing well: The title was decided on penalties with Balbriggan winning 2/1 in an excellent conclusion to the day’s proceedings:

 

GIRLS SECTION

 

KILKENNY’S Loreto Secondary School picked up full points in their group stage victories with four wins out of four:

Mentor Padraig Fitzpatrick had the girls focused early on as they set a blistering pace for the others to follow:

The Kilkenny girls defeated Loreto Mullingar (4/0), St: Vincent’s (5/2), Scoil Chriost Ri (1/0) and New Ross CBS (5/0) to see them advance to the final

Name sake, Loreto, Crumlin under the stewardship of Paul Howard had three wins from four in the second grouping with Loreto Bray drawing 1/1 on the day: Crumlin outplayed Eureka SS (4/2), St: Mary’s (8/0) and St: Leo’s (1/0) to sit top of the table:

It took extra time to decide the winner in the final game with a solitary goal for Kilkenny giving them the honours this season:

Balbriggan Community College & Loreto Secondary School, Kilkenny will now progress to the All Ireland Finals which will be held on Wednesday, December 4 at Franciscan College, Gormanston: We wish the schools the very best of luck in their endeavours to be crowned All Ireland Champions:
