Counties Share Spoils in Munster

Nenagh F.C. was the venue for the Munster Finals of the EA SPORTSTM FAI Schools 5-A-Side
Competition on Wednesday last, 13 May.

Last year the Munster Schools participating in the competition did incredibly well with 2 Schools picking up All Ireland glory. Soil Iognáid Ris, An Daingean were victorious in the B Boys Section and St. Anthony’s School in Cork won the elusive C Schools Section. Scoil Iognaid Ris had qualified again this year and werehoping to defend their Provincial & All Ireland crowns.

Broadford National School in Limerick were also hoping to continue their fine form which saw them capture the Munster title in 2008. The school had a fantastic run of form at the National Finals with the boys snatching an All Ireland runners-up medal last year.

This year, 30 teams descended on the Tipperary venue for the competition and things were hotting up for the Semi Final stages.

In the Boys A Section Ringaskiddy NS from Cork and Douglas NS Killorglin made it to the final. The final was a real tense affair but the Cork boys just edged it 2-1.

Section A Girls was also very keenly contested. Owning NS, the Waterford winners looked very good in their group but lost 2-1 to Greenmount in the semi final. Powerstown NS from Clonmel defeated Quilty NS from Clare in the other semi final. There was literally nothing between the teams in the final and it was no surprise that it finished 1-1. Laura Grace became the toast of Clonmel when she netted the golden goal to take the title.

In Section B Ballymacarbry NS from Waterford and Scoil Iognáiod Rís from Dingle qualified from Group A with the Co. Waterford boys winning both their matches. Goggins Hill NS from Cork and Drumtrasna NS from Limerick qualified from their group. Ballymacarbry and Scoil Iognáid Rís continued their winning ways to set up another encounter in the final. The Dingle boys reversed the earlier result with a great 3-0 victory.

There was a local victory in Section B Girls with St. Mary's Convent NS winning and in some style too. Having qualified in second place in their group they took off in the knock-out stages. They defeated Convent NS from Listowel 6-2 in the semi final. This set up a decider against Piltown NS, the Waterford champions who defeated Whitechurch from Cork 2-1 in the other semi final. The Nenagh girls won 4-1.

Despite some great football from Scoil Mhuire Fatima (North Monastery) from Cork and St. Paul's from Limerick this C Section was all about St. Declan's NS from Waterford and CBS Tralee. In their group the Waterford and Tralee boys both defeated Ennis NS. They drew 1-1 with each other. They won their semi finals comfortably. The final ended 2-2 after normal time despite the fact that St. Declan's led 2-0. Tralee fought back magnificently to level the match with the last kick of normal time. It seemed destined for penalties but St. Declan's got a dramatic late golden goal to take the title.
