The Cork Area Finals of the Xtra-vision FAI Schools 5-a-Side competition took place last Wednesday and Thursday at Turners Cross (28, 29 April).
All the teams who participated over the two days had come through the various County Qualifiers which were held in various venues over the preceding weeks. Entries were up again in Cork this year with many Schools making their debut in the Competition.
There were some cracking games over the two days with thrills and spills galore on the pristine Turners Cross surface.
The Boys Medium Sized Schools Competition went down to the wire with Clogheen and St Johns Mayfield in an end to end titanic sporting battle. The City side prevailed with the solitary goal ensuring they would progress to the Munster Finals. They will be joined there by Greenmount Girls who qualified in the Medium Sized Girls Schools Category recording three victories while conceding just a solitary goal.
The Boys Large Size Schools Competition was as competitive as ever with no more than a single goal between the sides in any of the games. St. Anthony’s Ballinlough, who won the National Finals in 2008, came through with wins over Scoil Barra Ballincollig and the North Mon before finally drawing with Glasheen. The girls representing Scoil Barra went one further than the Boys when they qualified in the Girls Large Schools Category. The Ballincollig side were pushed all the way by debutants St Johns Carrigaline and Beaumount and last years winners Whitechurch.
The last Competition played was the Boys Small Sized Schools and here Scoil Iosagain Aghada were simply awesome. Bweeng, Ringaskiddy and St Marks from the Glen played superbly but couldn’t get close to the prolific East Cork side. Next on the agenda for the Cork Winning Schools is the Regional Sports Centre in Waterford which plays host to the Munster Finals on May 12th.
