Charleville CBS retain Junior Cup crown

UMBRO FAI Schools Junior Boys Munster FINAL

Carrigaline Community School 0/1 Charleville CBS

         Robbie Hanley (34)

FREE/SCORING Charleville CBS fulfilled their promise and lived up to their reputation when they retained the UMBRO FAI Schools Junior Munster Boys Cup with a hard fought win over Carrigaline Community School at Turner’s Cross today (March 9) reports Noel Spillane:

The North Cork side managed by teacher/in/charge Tim O’Mahony scored nine goals in two games against Limerick CBS and Colaiste Muire of Cobh enroute to the decider and they didn’t disappoint in the finale either:

Dominic Foley’s alma mater dominated the opening 20 minutes to such an extent that there was only one team in it at that stage yet slowly but surely Carrigaline, under Canice Kennedy, edged their way back into the tie:

It was all Charleville to begin with, possession wise, but they never really threatened to score and with limited possession Carrigaline went close twice through Jamie De Puis:  His first effort was saved by man/of/the/match Brian O’Connell and then he fired over following a 26th minute corner:

Anthony O’Donnell shot over from a free, before, De Puis missed the best chance of the half in a one/on/one with the ‘keeper as he lifted the ball onto the roof of the net:

And Carrigaline were punished when Charleville grabbed a 34th minute lead as winger Robbie Hanley headed the ball over Aidan Flynn’s head into the net on the end of full/back Alan McCourt’s pass:

Carrigaline introduced Aaron Tang for Sam Hegarty at the break and the County Cork boys came storming back but they found Charleville’s Brian O’Connell in superb form between the posts:

O’Connell saved Tang’s close range effort early in the second half and then made a magnificent double save to keep out Danny O’Connor’s effort as they pressed for an equaliser:

Charleville’s Patrick O’Callaghan twice went close to wrapping the game up but fired wide each time before Carrigaline’s Anthony O’Donnell found himself in the clear, but stretching to reach the ball, in the box, he steered his effort wide of the far post:

It was end/to/end action at this late stage as both sides gave it their all and goal/scorer Hanley had another chance for Charleville but his tame shot was easily saved by Flynn:

O’Callaghan was denied again late on and in the last minute Carrigaline’s O’Donnell headed over from a corner as the final whistle sounded in the wet and windy surrounds of Turners Cross:

“It was a great win for us and it’s great to retain the trophy: We beat St: Brendan’s, Killarney in the final last year and as holders it was nice to retain the cup:

We were knocked out of the Harty Cup this year but we won the rugby and now we’ve retained our soccer trophy so that’s not bad going for a small school of just 250 pupils,” said Tim O’Mahony afterwards:

Best for the winners were goalkeeper Brian O’Connell, Jeremy Bridgeman, Mark O’Halloran and Patrick O’Callaghan while Dara Corcoran, Anthony O’Donnell and Jamie De Puis impressed for Carrigaline:
