Two Cork Schools capture National Futsal titles in First Year Finale

Cork schools win National Futsal titles

St. Francis College, Rochestown, Cork (Boys) and Presentation Secondary School, Ballyphehane, Cork (Girls) were crowned 2017 FAI Post Primary Schools First Year National Futsal Champions on Tuesday afternoon (December 5) in Waterford IT Sports Arena.

St. Francis College aka Roco ended the day with three wins out of three, while Presentation Secondary School won a dramatic three-way penalty shootout to win the girls competition.

BOYS TOURNAMENT
In the first round of fixtures in the boy’s tournament, St. Francis College, Rochestown (Cork) and Good Counsel College, New Ross (Wexford) both won their opening games.

St. Francis College came from 2-1 down to beat Donegal’s Carndonagh Community School to win 3-2.

Harry Nevin scored twice for the Cork school to earn them three points. Darby Purcell scored twice for Good Counsel as they defeated Galway’s St. Joseph’s College 3-1.

St. Francis College and Good Counsel made it two wins from two to set up a winner-takes-all match in the final game.

The Cork school defeated Galway’s St. Joseph’s 6-0. Like he did in the first game, Harry Nevin scored twice for the Cork side.

New Ross school Good Counsel defeated Carndonagh 5-2. Sam Norval scored all five goals for the tournament debutants.

In the boy’s tournament, it all came down to the final group game between St. Francis and Good Counsel to become National Champions.  Player of the Tournament Harry Nevin scored a hat-trick in the 5-1 win for St. Francis. Nevin scored eight goals in the tournament which was an impressive outing for the youngster

Donegal’s Carndonagh ended their campaign with a win. They defeated St. Joseph’s 2-0 to claim third place.

GIRLS TOURNAMENT

There were wins in the opening round of fixtures of the girls tournament for St. Attracta’s Community School, Tubbercurry (Sligo) and Presentation Secondary School, Ballyphehane (Cork).

Two second-half goals for St. Attracta’s helped them defeat St. Leo’s College (Carlow) 2-0, while two goals from Lya Gilhooly saw Presentation Secondary School defeat Donegal’s Carndonagh Community School 2-1 in a highly entertaining contest.

Cork’s Ballyphehane were the only side with a 100% record after two matches. They defeated St. Attracta’s 2-1 with Sophie Thompson scoring the crucial winner.

St. Leo’s won their first match of the tournament with 4-2 win over Carndonagh in their second match. Emma Walker scored either side of the break to ensure the Carlow side earned the three points.

The final round of fixtures saw St. Leo’s defeat the previously unbeaten Presentation SS 6-2, while St. Attracta’s defeated Carndonagh CS 3-1.

After three games, St. Leo’s College, Presentation SS and St. Attracta’s all won two games and entered a three-way round-robin penalty shoot-out to crown the National Champions in a tense finale to the day.

Presentation SS won both of their shootouts, while St. Attracta’s defeated St. Leo’s to claim the silver medals.

Speaking after the tournament, FAI National Co-ordinator for Schools and Third Level Football Mark Scanlon was delighted with the level on show.

“I would like to congratulate St. Francis College Rochestown and Presentation Secondary School, Ballyphehane on becoming National Champions, in particular St. Francis who came second last year in the boy’s competition. We had teams from six counties taking part in today’s competitions and the standard was at an all-time high.

It was brilliant to see the skill and passion on show today at the WIT Arena from the players on the court. Overall the tournament has been a massive success in 2017 and we are delighted with the increased participation in Futsal at Primary and Post Primary level this year, with over 16,000 students taking part”.
