A hat-trick of goals from Newport’s St. Mary’s Secondary School enabled them to see past Foxford outfit St. Joseph’s Secondary School in a highly entertaining tie in Salthill Devon last Thursday (April 19).
Goalkeeper Cushla Ruane was the busier for the two keepers that day with the youngster called into action after 12 minutes with Abbie Lenihan rifling off a shot from distance that produced a fine save from the Foxford keeper.
St. Joseph’s responded with a Milo Sotoparra effort which went agonizingly close to the far post after twenty minutes.
Four minutes later, Abbie Lenihan found the net with a close range shot following a neat passage of play courtesy of Aileen Rochford.
Captain Caragh Flynn doubled their advantage seven minutes from time while Lenihan netted her second of the day and Newport’s third with two minutes remaining to ensure the win.
St. Mary’s SS, Newport will now line out against St. Laurence College, Loughlinstown in this year’s Cup decider. The Dubliners scored twice to defeat Pobalscoil Ghaoth Dobhair in the other semi-final outing in Gortakeegan on Tuesday last.
Both teams will now be gearing up for Bank of Ireland FAI Schools First Year ‘B’ Girls National Cup Final which is scheduled for May 8.
